Green Your Halloween: Trick-or-Treat!

As a little girl, Halloween nite was second only to Christmas morning for me. Getting dressed up, staying out late and collecting a bunch of sweets? It didn't get too much better than that! Whether you're taking the kids out trick-or-treating or are the one staying in to pass out goodies, you can be green about it. Here's a few tips on how to be green on Halloween nite.

At Home
"Porch Light
Try a solar powered light this year to light up your porch. Or make sure to switch your porch light bulb to a CFL bulb, if you haven’t already done so.

Battery Operated
If you are using a Halloween decoration that needs batteries, like a moving hand in a candy bowl, use rechargeable batteries to keep it going. and use LED lights for decorating (source)".

Out on the Town
WALK!
If you're going to be eco- friendly this Hallowen, you'd better start by walking to your trick-or-treat destinations. If you live way out of town car pool with a bunch of families out to town.

In the Bag
If you're not already using a pillowcase, opt for a Chico bag like this limited edition Halloween one for $5. Contact greenhalloween@chicobag.com for sales information or click the picture to purchase. Promise me you won't buy the unnecessary candy buckets from WalMart (remember this at Easter, too)! They are wasteful and use plastic that just don't get me started.

Check your local fabric store for Halloween prints and sew up the sides to make your own! YOu can use both of these for years to come.

The Treats
One of the greatest horrors of Halloween is the incredible waste that those fun-sized candies create. Unfortunately, it has to be that way... for I don't know that I'd trust anyone with my (if I had one) child's life these days. Trust no one! In this crazy world our candy has to be individually wrapped for health purposes. I don't foresee a change in this occurring anytime soon.

Give Out Organic Treats
"Be the first, start a fashion..." Pseudolus says in A Funny Thing... Forum! Avoid buying those huge bags of Hershey brand candies this year, and instead go for organic treats. Back at home, when parents are checking over their child's goodie bags they will notice your out of place organic treat and will certainly take note. It will stand out from the Reese's, Mound's and
Organic Lollipop, Fair trade coins(for Pirate themes), Equal Exchange Chocolates are a few examples of earth-friendly candies you can treat your costumed visitors to.

"Give out eco-friendly candy. The problem with Halloween is that all the candy must be wrapped in eco-unfriendly packaging. Due to safety concerns, kids are taught not to accept unwrapped candy. Hand out candy that is wrapped in paper. Many brands of taffy are wrapped in paper. There are also paper pouches full of gummy fruit snacks.source"
